IAA Mobility: The lithium-ion battery as a key technology for electromobility

The International Motor Show (IAA) in Munich is traditionally the showcase of the future for the automotive industry. Last week, numerous automakers and suppliers presented their innovations and visionary concepts for sustainable, digital and, above all, electric mobility to an international audience. Behind each of the newly presented electric vehicles is a component that is invisible from the outside, but crucial: the battery cell. CustomCells develops and supplies the latest lithium-ion cell technology and focuses on customized premium battery cells that power e-cars of today and tomorrow.


This year's IAA has once again made it clear that the future of mobility is electric. At the official opening of the mobility trade show, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reaffirmed the German government's goal of putting 15 million electric cars on the roads by 2030. VDA President Hildegard Müller spoke of a "performance show of innovations" and emphasized the holistic progress in the field of electromobility.

In addition to the expansion of the charging infrastructure, a key prerequisite for the further ramp-up and acceptance of electromobility is sustainable and high-performance battery cell technology in Germany. The battery is one of the central components of an electric car, regardless of segment and vehicle class: it influences both the range and the performance of the vehicle and, with a cost share of up to 40 percent, is the most expensive but also the most central individual component.

CustomCells, with sites in Itzehoe (Schleswig-Holstein) and Tübingen (Baden-Württemberg), is an innovation driver in the development and manufacture of application-specific battery cells. With high-performance batteries developed in Germany and development partnerships in Silicon Valley (San Francisco, USA), the company is driving the drive turnaround as a key enabler: The battery cell pioneer supplies six of the world's ten largest automakers and six of the top 10 automotive suppliers in Germany. This makes CustomCells one of the pioneers in the global battery industry.

As a technological development partner, CustomCells supports customers along the entire battery value chain - from the initial idea, through prototyping and series production, to project planning and commissioning of customers' own gigafactories. Most recently, the German battery pioneer announced a strategic, project-based development partnership with OneD Battery Sciences. The companies have agreed to optimize, manufacture and deliver BEV prototype cells to a global automotive manufacturer in a first joint project.
