CUSTOMCELLS® develops and produces electrode pastes of the highest quality for various energy storage technologies. Electrode development and production is carried out according to specified customer requirements and based on state-of-the-art technologies. On the cathode side, CUSTOMCELLS® uses innovative water-based paste formulations in addition to traditional organic solvent systems (N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) base). NMP was included in 2018 in the REACH Annex XVII to control health risks in the context of electrode manufacturing. Since May 2020, NMP can therefore only be marketed and used if compliance with certain exposure limits can be ensured. The substitution of NMP with water in the processing of NMC622 serves this requirement. CUSTOMCELLS® thus completely dispenses with NMP.
CUSTOMCELLS® has a recipe for the water-based processing of NMC622 (cathode material). At the beginning of the formulation development, the selection of a suitable aqueous binder system as well as the assurance of paste stability to avoid the formation of agglomerates were important. Adjusting the pH was a key issue to protect the NMC622 active material and prevent corrosion of the aluminum current collector. The manufacturing process was designed from the outset for an extruder to minimize the contact time of the cathode material with water. In close cooperation with the Twin Screw Extruder manufacturer Coperion, the configuration of the extruder was optimized for the specific manufacturing process. This was followed by optimization of the drying parameters.
ADVANTAGES OF THE USE OF AN WATER-BASED CATHODE PASTE
+ Substitution of toxic solvents by water
+ A low-cost and environmentally friendly cathode paste production process
+ Scalability thanks to continuous extruder process
+ High-quality production process
+ Very good electrochemical properties
+ Established standard formulations
+ Formulation development for tailor-made electrodes possible
CUSTOMCELLS® offers water-based NMC622 cathodes with different loadings. In addition, the development of aqueous cathode and anode pastes in the extruder is also possible according to special parameters and based on customer materials.
